Round Norfolk Relay

Tue, 31st Dec 2013 - 4:46 p.m.

The annual Round Norfolk Relay is on 20 / 21 September 2014. This is a 197 mile continuous relay in 17 separate unequal multi-terrain stages, from 5 to 20 miles. The organisers asked if we'd be interested in fielding a team. See http://www.roundnorfolkrelay.com.

We will need 17 team members. Once confirmed this will of course require commitment. Let me know if people are interested in doing this. The organisers are willing to come and do an evening presentation if there is enough of an interest.

Fri, 3rd Jan 2014 - 1:42 p.m.

Hi Jaap, looks like an interesting end of season event. Put me down for a leg!

Fri, 3rd Jan 2014 - 2:47 p.m.

Sounds fun but already entered for the Equinox 24 that weekend.

Fri, 3rd Jan 2014 - 3:31 p.m.

Hi Jaap

I'm up for this too.

Fri, 3rd Jan 2014 - 3:48 p.m.

Count me in too. We do offer a 10-mile cross country run in conjunction with the Ride and Tie on Sunday 6th April, for anybody that doesn't want to do the race. However, the last 2 years have seen ZERO take-up, so I'd be surprised if we can get a team for the Relays.

Once again, we have invited Werrington Joggers to organise their Sunday club run from Woodnewton VH when we have the Ride and Tie, to give people options. Would be good if we had some takers this year.

Sat, 4th Jan 2014 - 5:02 p.m.

Hi,
Good to see there is some interest. Based on that I'll email to the whole club, see what response I get.
Jaap

Mon, 13th Jan 2014 - 9:19 a.m.

Hi Jaap, I will be available that weekend so put me down for a leg (or 2).

Mon, 13th Jan 2014 - 1:21 p.m.

Count me in!

Tue, 14th Jan 2014 - 12:24 p.m.

Re the Norfolk Relay I ok for all legs except 10 and 12.

Tue, 14th Jan 2014 - 2:59 p.m.

Hi Jaap...impressive Frostbite time last weekend? I would be up for the Norfolk Relay

Tue, 14th Jan 2014 - 9:49 p.m.

Hi Jaap, I'd be up for this, preferably an off road section.

Sun, 2nd Feb 2014 - 5:30 p.m.

Having helped with this event before as a support cyclist a mini-bus or Campervan (with Bike Rack) is very useful indeed!

Sat, 8th Feb 2014 - 8:05 p.m.

Hi Jaap
I would be up for being part of the team. Could do 10 miles or so, preferably not too much XCountry!!
Wendy Gooding

Sun, 9th Feb 2014 - 8:04 p.m.

Jaap, count me in for a stage (or 2). Should be back to fitness by then!

Wed, 19th Feb 2014 - 10:55 a.m.

Hi,
We have about 17 expressions of interest - very good but not yet enough to enter a team, given the risk of injuries etc. The entries open in March, so I'll make a final request then. In the meantime, please ask clubmates to see if they are interested: to race, to be a stand-in and / or to support during the day.
Jaap

Mon, 10th Mar 2014 - 2:19 p.m.

Stage distances:
1 16.81
2 14.06
3 5.76
4 11.14
5 10.81

10 20.06
11 14.60
12 19.67
13 13.25
14 7.27
15 10.59
16 5.49
17 11.73

Total 197.20

We will need a Team Vehicle as well as our own Timekeeper, accompanying cyclist for Stage 1, food and provisions. Start and Finish is in Kings Lynn. Overnight Accomodation is available, but I can't see what time the event starts.

Sat, 22nd Mar 2014 - 9:57 p.m.

The Entry Period will last for 14 days from 14th - 27th April. Entry is £225 per team.

Any more interest at this stage? Don't be shy. You know you want to.

Mon, 31st Mar 2014 - 5:49 p.m.

Can we not do x2 stages some of us?? I could do stage 7 and 16??

Thu, 3rd Apr 2014 - 9:58 a.m.

I would be able to do 1 short stage and 1 long stage also. This seems like a good idea if we are short of numbers

Sun, 6th Apr 2014 - 10:03 p.m.

Hi all,

I haven't received any further expressions of interest, so we are still at 17 - to be honest, I don't think we should register if don't have a few more because we'll need support crew and some reserves to cover those that will be injured then. I'm afraid the rules are explicit about only allowing each runner to do one leg - I guess we could use that as an emergency but I don't think we should plan for it.

I will send out one final email ahead of the registration period, let's decide based on the responses.

Jaap

Thu, 10th Apr 2014 - 7:24 p.m.

Jaap, Darren White is looking to the RNR, he's not yet a PACTRAC member, but is looking to join up imminently.

Fri, 11th Apr 2014 - 8:31 a.m.

I am available this is one I have always wanted to do, ok for any leg under 15miles in daylight.

Fri, 11th Apr 2014 - 2:38 p.m.

I can still do a leg Jaap.. don't mind which one

Mon, 14th Apr 2014 - 8:44 p.m.

Hi all,
Almost all of those who had previously expressed their interest have confirmed they are still keen, so based on that I've just entered a team. We will hear just after 27 April whether we have got in. Fingers crossed!
Jaap

Tue, 15th Apr 2014 - 8:03 p.m.

Jaap, Darren told me he was sending his membership application off last weekend, hope his name has been added to the team. Cheers.

Fri, 18th Apr 2014 - 9:23 a.m.

Yes, absolutely. I will involve him in future emails.

Tue, 29th Apr 2014 - 6:37 p.m.

Hi all,

Our application has been successful!! I'll communicate directly by email with those who have confirmed their participation and will keep the others informed through the Forum.

Please do let me know if anyone else is interested in taking part or supporting the team in September!

Thanks,
Jaap

Can't seem to find out what time the event starts which makes it difficult to predict changover times at the moment.

Mon, 19th May 2014 - 3:27 p.m.

Steve, I believe the start time id dictated by each teams projected time. The start times are staggered so all teams potentially finish at same time.

Mon, 19th May 2014 - 5:35 p.m.

"The Lynnsport & Leisure Park race centre in Kings Lynn, has all the facilities of a modern, efficient and expertly staffed sports complex. Teams may stay overnight (Free of charge) either camping or sleeping in the building and meals can be provided.

A staggered start, based on anticipated finishing times, ensures that teams of similar ability start together, with faster teams chasing. If the stagger works, all teams should finish the race by 9:15am to 10:00am on the Sunday. With the first teams starting at 5:30 am on Saturday this allows for teams running an average of 8mins 40secs per mile throughout the course."

Steve: If the guys in front of you get a move-on, it might still be light enough for a swim when you reach Great Yarmouth. No pressure then DPH, Stuart, Carry, Giles, Simon, Jaap, Wendy and Mariska, but Steve's on a tight schedule here!

Mon, 19th May 2014 - 8:08 p.m.

Yes, I think I guessed 25 hours and a bit when I submitted the entry form but we will finetune that before the race. That would see us start between 8am and 9am.

Note that Paul Frampton has now taken my place on the roster.

Mon, 19th May 2014 - 8:10 p.m.

Guess I've drawn the short straw then!!!

Tue, 20th May 2014 - 3:41 p.m.

Message from Adrian Tasker:

" Just to let you know I did Cycle support for Thorney last year at this event. A couple of tips, as it was their 1st time.

Simon Hoppe has got a brute of a leg as this is mostly across a stony beach and with the most climbs also!

· If you can get a camper van with a bike rack for the weekend this would be very useful for cups of tea etc in the middle of the night and a chance for runners & cyclists to keep warm and dry. Also having a table to co-ordinate runners is useful.

· The next best option is a mini bus and to take the back seat out to store bikes!

· For the first few legs you need a mountain bike then after that a hybrid will be sufficient! "

Does anybody have any model aeroplanes. We could be like Bomber Command plotting everybody's whereabouts!

and there's more ... "A further tip will be to have multiple phones from differing providers as in the darkest recesses of Norfolk Vodafone, O2 etc have a mixed reception!

PACTRAC should have a really strong team & I believe that there is a prize for the best debutantes.

The logistics of getting people to the start and then back to the start having completed their stage is a bit of a nightmare ".

Sat, 21st Jun 2014 - 9:17 p.m.

Hi all,

We are starting to make our plans for the Round Norfolk Relay, which will start on Saturday morning 20 September and finish on Sunday morning 21 September after 197 miles in 17 stages (http://www.roundnorfolkrelay.com). We have a very keen and committed team of 17 runners, but we could do with some help from other club members.

The most important vacancy is that of Principal Timekeeper - this is possibly the most important member of the team, taking responsibility for recording the split time at the change-overs of each of the 17 legs. The plan is that the Timekeeper will make his/her way to each change-over in a separate car. This requires a diligent and committed person, who will have truly earned his / her PACTRAC - RNR hoodie when we finish after 25ish hours on Sunday morning. It is also possible to do this as a duo, or split the stages between two people. You will get support from runners and other volunteers to get you through the night.

We also need a list of substitutes. We currently have a full team but not much more, and as we all know, there are likely to be a few injured team members by the time it's 20 September.

Finally, any further support will be very welcome: you can join a few stages in the support vehicle or with the timekeeper, cycle or run along with the runners or just cheer them on in the middle of the night, or come to the start or finish in King's Lynn.

Any support is welcome, please let us know if you want to be part of this club adventure!

Jaap

Sun, 22nd Jun 2014 - 12:23 p.m.

Hi Jaap

Put me down on the reserve list and I will come along and help/support as well!

Jason

Sun, 22nd Jun 2014 - 9:50 p.m.

I can help/support during the days but cannot loose my beauty sleep like you young ones! Georgina

Wed, 30th Jul 2014 - 10:56 p.m.

It's getting towards the time when we need to submit the order for the new vests to VO2 so that we receive them before the RNR. I spoke with Christina this evening and she wants to place the order by the end of the week. With that in mind, if you have not requested a vest already and still want one, you have until tomorrow evening (Thursday 31st) to to let me know your size. The order will then be submitted on Friday.

Regarding the Juniors vests, Christine is going to speak to VO2, however, we'll most likely bulk order these.

Thu, 31st Jul 2014 - 9:43 p.m.

All, I'm about to pass all names and order requirements to Christina. For those that have seen her email regarding sizes, the female fits are all accurate 8, 10, 12, however, the mens are a little on the large size: XS is 38", S is 40" with sizes in 2" increments from then on. I'm taking an executive decision and dropping everyones order by one size, but also adding extra vests of each fit in case people wish to further down size.

Thu, 31st Jul 2014 - 9:45 p.m.

Cheers Paul. Mine is a small then mate

Thu, 31st Jul 2014 - 10:29 p.m.

Grrr Dave, just sent Christina the order! Guess I can make an exception for you and add you onto it!!!

Thu, 31st Jul 2014 - 10:29 p.m.

:-))))

Thu, 14th Aug 2014 - 7:09 p.m.

Hi all,

One of our runners has had to drop out due to a severe injury. Who would be up for running stage 2? It is 14 miles along the beautiful Norfolk Coast Path from Hunstanton to Burnham Overy Staithe. See http://www.roundnorfolkrelay.com/route_maps_os_2011/stage2.pdf
This will be on Saturday 20 September, with runner 2 probably starting around 11am.

There will be an exclusive Pactrac - Round Norfolk Relay team hoodie, plus of course buckets full of team spirit and sense of achievement.

Thanks,
Jaap

Thu, 14th Aug 2014 - 8:33 p.m.

hi jaap im definitely up for this if the space is still open

Fri, 15th Aug 2014 - 4:39 p.m.

also if you nee to contact me my number is 07547233901

Thu, 28th Aug 2014 - 10:18 p.m.

For anyone that ordered vests, the expected delivery date from VO2 is around the 7 Sep, as such there will only be around 10 days in which to distribute them. Sue Macleod has kindly volunteered to facilitate the this by bringing the vests to the Oundle swim sessions on each Mon, Wed and Fri prior to the RNR. Vests cost £24 (£20 + vat), please bring along the correct money, Sue is unlikely to have change! For the male vests, please remember to pick up the size smaller than requested as per the VO2 size guide.

Thanks,

Paul

Tue, 2nd Sep 2014 - 2:12 p.m.

Logistics include:

DAY: (6:45am to 7:00pm) Must have a bike escort behind the runner. Bikers need a reflective outfit or Hi-Viz Jacket. Stage 1-4. No cycles are allowed on the course.

NIGHT: (7:00pm to 6:45am) Must have an escort car directly behind the runner. Runners must wear Hi-Viz Jackets, as should Timekeepers.

I have the PACTRAC stock of Hi-Viz Jackets. If you want to pick one up from me in advance, see me at Oundle Pool etc beforehand. Otherwise, I will have them at the HQ at Lynsport. Look for the caravan and PACTRAC Flags, where tea and coffee will be on-tap.

Mon, 8th Sep 2014 - 9:02 p.m.

I'm sorry to have to report that the vests were delivered with a printing error. In short the old template showing a 'watermark' on the front has been printed in. The suppliers, have accepted that this is their error and are working to replace all the vests, to deliver to me next Monday 15th.

This means that collection will only be possible from the School pool on Monday 15th and Wednesday 17th.

If this will cause problems then let me know, we might be able to sort something else.

If you asked for a vest, but are not doing the Round Norfolk Relays please can you bear with us for now so we prioritise getting them to the folks needing them asap.

Sat, 13th Sep 2014 - 5:07 p.m.

Vests are in. All looks good. Will bring to the Pool on Monday.

Mon, 22nd Sep 2014 - 1:30 p.m.

Cracking photo of Dave PH making a determined start to the RNR enjoyed by Giles in the background! http://www.roundnorfolkrelay.com/rnr_gallery/displayimage.php?album=108&pos=173

Thanks again to Jaap for all the organising, Robin for the hoodie sponsorship and all the timekeepers & support crews, (special thanks to Mike & partner for his help on my leg)

Hi all,

It took a while to get them (and even longer for me to get around to posting this), but here's a photo of the trophies we won at the RNR: the perpetual trophy for best newcomers (that's the hare on the wooden plate - not quite sure about the symbolism there), the associated crystal trophy to keep, and Paul Vernon's stage victory trophy.

I thought of organising a year-long relay of the trophy around the team, but maybe not... Let me know if any of the team members wants to have it for a bit though!

Thanks,
Jaap

Sun, 23rd Nov 2014 - 4:02 p.m.

Well done everyone. If I remember rightly, the hare is the logo for Ryston Runners, who started the whole thing.
