Sun, 20th Sep 2015 - 4:09 p.m.

Hi all,

It still feels like summer (well, British summer), but it's time again to start looking forward to this winter's Frostbite season. The dates and fixtures have been confirmed and are listed on the website: http://www.frostbiteleague.org.uk. So these are the dates to put in your diary:
4th October 2015 - Priory Park, St Neots
1st November 2015 - Ormiston Bushfield Academy Sports Centre, Peterborough
13th December 2015 - Hinchingbrooke Park, Huntingdon
10th January 2016 - Elm Road Sportfield, March
7th February 2016 - Bourne Woods, Bourne
13th March 2016 - Hinchingbrooke School, Huntingdon

For those who are new to this: Frostbite is a series of 6 races organised by and for 16 local running clubs. Each race is about 5 miles, and usually on the first Sunday of the month from October to April. It is a team race in which the first seven men and the first three women count for the club. Entry is free. The only condition is that you have to wear some form of Pactrac kit (and be a member of course). And there are trophies at the end of the year for the best male and female Pactrac runner of the series (who I get to pick so you know who you need to bribe).

We didn't do very well in the past, but the last four years were much better. We finished 7th overall three years ago, which was our best result since the 98/99 season. Not bad for a bunch of triathletes! Last year we were 11th overall, but with some excellent race results, including Paul Vernon's spectacular 100% record of individual wins.

Everyone is welcome; you don't have to be a top runner, these are great friendly events with 100s of runners of all possible levels. Even if you are not in our scoring teams, you may still be taking points off other teams. And they are good races to track your fitness compared with others, and compared with previous years. It is usually quite difficult for us to find enough women to race, so ladies are especially welcome.

Please note that there is also a Juniors Frostbite series for under 16s, with 1.5 mile races starting at 10.15 at the same venue. I'm not organising our team for this though - please speak with Sam Fielding if you are interested.

I will send reminder / rallying emails in the week before each race - first one next week, ahead of 4th October's St Neots race. Put it in your diary! We will also be using the Website Forum for car sharing opportunities - please post there if you are looking for a ride.

Thanks,
Jaap

Mon, 21st Sep 2015 - 2:37 p.m.

Car Sharing??? Some of us will be meeting at 9:00am in Stilton. Park opposite the Cheese in the High Street. It's a 23 mile cycle from there, and the same back, with a mere 5-mile run in between. All welcome.

Sun, 27th Sep 2015 - 4:05 p.m.

Next Sunday 4 October is the first race of the new season of the Frostbite Friendly League. See previous post / email for further information about the Frostbite series. As always, Race 1 is in Priory Park, Huntingdon Road in St Neots, starting at 11am. Directions are on:
http://www.frostbiteleague.org.uk/Race1_riverside_map.pdf

This year's course isn't on the website, but I presume it's the same as in previous years: all in the Park; mostly on grass plus a few bits on forest tracks; no tarmac. Off road shoes or even spikes are an option, but if it's dry, normal running shoes are fine.

Please let me know if you are interested, preferably on the Forum, otherwise on jjf_99@hotmail.com. It would be good to get a feel for who is running, so that we know if we have a complete team or not, and need to do some rallying.

Thanks
Jaap

Sun, 27th Sep 2015 - 4:19 p.m.

Will be at of them apart from the first one unfortunately!

Sun, 27th Sep 2015 - 5:01 p.m.

I plan to be there. I would never make it on time if tried to ride with Steve, so I will be driving from Hampton Hargate/Peterborough if anyone wants to jump in with me.

Sun, 27th Sep 2015 - 5:02 p.m.

Also, I will need a running top. Where and when can in purchase one this week?

Sun, 27th Sep 2015 - 5:47 p.m.

Looking forward to Frostbite. I'll be there plus there should another, like myself, from Kettering Town Harriers who has/is joining PACTRAC as 2nd claim for Frostbite access this year.

Cheers,

Rob

Sun, 27th Sep 2015 - 5:50 p.m.

After speaking with Mariska I'm up for these, but can't make October.

Sun, 27th Sep 2015 - 8:24 p.m.

I'll be there on Sunday. Looking forward to it, they were great last year.

Mon, 28th Sep 2015 - 2:44 p.m.

Me, Sean Pooley and Nick Forscutt will be attending.

Mon, 28th Sep 2015 - 2:49 p.m.

I'm hoping to be there, will be doing an easy 7 miles before and 3 after if anyone else needs a longer run.

Tue, 29th Sep 2015 - 9:55 a.m.

Amy Hayes, I'll be coming down from Stamford so I could drive to Hampton and meet you and sneak in your car for the remainder of the journey if you don't mind? Let me know your address if that sounds like a good idea? I also need a running vest, I hope they've got a box full there on Sunday.
Thanks,
A.

Tue, 29th Sep 2015 - 10:07 a.m.

Vests were at swimming on Monday night.

They will be there again on Wednesday. (Hopefully Steve will then collect them and take on Sunday too)

Sorry but I can not get to the pool or the Frostbite this week due to family commitments.

Any volunteers to help coordinate club kit sales going forward?

Tue, 29th Sep 2015 - 2:21 p.m.

Andrea, you can ride with me. Email me to further discuss. Amy.hayes83@gmail.com

Christina, what all does coordinating club kit sales entail? I might be able to help.

I will be to the pool Wednesday to hopefully get a running top for myself.

Wed, 30th Sep 2015 - 8:33 a.m.

Sorry Jaap working for this one. 😕

Sat, 3rd Oct 2015 - 8:16 p.m.

I'll be there tomorrow. Have a retro vest!!

Hi all,

Good running at the first Frostbite in St Neots 3 weeks ago. We had all our male scorers in the top 100, which is usually a good sign - welcome to our top runner Tom for his first race with us. Also welcome to Andrea and Donna who were our nr. 1 and 2 ladies in their first race. We were 8th overall; not bad and with potential for improvement.

Next week is the second leg. As always, this is at Bushfield in Orton, Peterborough. Race HQ is Ormiston Bushfield Academy, which is the same as the last few years; this is next door to the Recreation Centre where the HQ used to be in the past. For directions, see http://www.frostbiteleague.org.uk/Race2_Bushymap.pdf

The course has not been confirmed, but will be similar to previous years: close to 5 miles, a combination of roads and foot-/cycle paths through the Orton estates and business parks, with a mile or 2 of forest track thrown in. If you haven't been before and want to get an idea: last year's course can still be found on www.frostbiteleague.org.uk/Default%20page/Race2%20Senior%20Frostbite%20Route.pdf.

As always: the start is at 11am, it is free to take part, it's a club race and everyone (from super fast to super slow) contributes, both by scoring points and by contributing to club feel (in random order)! All you need is to be a member and wear some form of Pactrac kit. Let us know if you need to buy any.

Vests to look out for when approaching the finish line next week are Yaxley & Ramsey (just ahead of us in the rankings) and Fenland & BRJ (just behind).

Please let me know if you are planning to run, preferably on the Forum.

Thanks,
Jaap

Mon, 7th Dec 2015 - 7:55 a.m.

Hi all,

We had our best results in a very long time last month at the 2nd leg of the Frostbite Running Series in Bushfield: 2nd for both the seniors and the juniors! Paul Vernon returned and was straight back to his winning ways; Abi Schofield made her PACTRAC Frostbite debut and came in as 6th lady; our scoring teams were incredible with our 7th man in 59th and our 2nd and 3rd ladies both in the ladies top 20. And with 29 team members in total, the others helped by pushing the other teams' runners down the list. Well done, let's keep it up! We are now in 5th place, looking up!

Next Sunday is this year's 3rd Frostbite race, at Hinchingbrooke Park in Huntingdon. As always it starts at 11am and is free to enter, but you do have to be a member and wear club kit (let us know if you need any). There is a good competitive element (see above...), but Frostbites are also great social events to catch up with clubmates about race plans and boast about winter training or lack thereof.

The course hasn't been published yet, but will be similar to the usual at Hinchingbrooke: a twisty and turny combination of grass, muddy and firm forest paths and tarmac. Definitely one for offroad shoes, especially given the weather, but not suitable for spikes. If you want to get an impression, last years' course can still be found online: http://www.frostbiteleague.org.uk/Default%20page/Race3%20course%202014.pdf.

Please take note of the parking arrangements: there is only very little space at the Park itself and the organisers ask to park at the Huntingdon race course. There is a 10 minute signposted walk to the Race HQ - not suitable for prams and wheelchairs. There is paid parking at the Hospital. Full directions below: http://www.frostbiteleague.org.uk/Race3_Directions.pdf

Please let me know if you plan to race; preferably on the Forum, otherwise on jjf_99@hotmail.com.

Thanks,
Jaap

Mon, 7th Dec 2015 - 10:58 a.m.

I'll be there. I'm sure we can continue the great start we've had in the league!

Tue, 8th Dec 2015 - 10:45 a.m.

I'll be there too, looking forward to it. Come on all Pactracers, let's beat our show at Bushfield.

Wed, 9th Dec 2015 - 5:16 p.m.

I'll be there.

Fri, 11th Dec 2015 - 8:25 p.m.

Hi all
Very few responses thus far... Would be good to hear from more people that they are running this Sunday, before I send another club-wide email.
Jaap

Sat, 12th Dec 2015 - 11:25 a.m.

Jaap, I created this as an event on our FB page, we have 36 indicated they are going, and a further 17 possible.
Actual numbers likely to be slightly lower, but should have enough for a good show.

Sat, 12th Dec 2015 - 1:44 p.m.

Ah, just saw that, brilliant! Clearly need to check my Facebook more #dinosaur

Sun, 13th Dec 2015 - 8:59 p.m.

We only just had a full team at this morning's race, but still got a decent 6th place: well done to those who turned up! We held on to our 5th place overall. An unprecedented 4 of our men in the top 10: Paul Vernon got another win, Tom Briggs in 6th, Paul Lunn in 9th and Rob Brownlee in 10th. Kim Bell did her first Frostbite, sprained her ankle at mile 4 but still made it across the line - well done as we only had 3 ladies running. Well done all!

Next race is on 10 January in March, put it in your calendars...

The Juniors got 3rd overall - great result again, and thanks for the cheers and cupcakes!

Sun, 13th Dec 2015 - 10:03 p.m.

Great work everyone, really good going today.

Sun, 3rd Jan 2016 - 2:50 p.m.

Hi all,

Happy new year!

We had a decent sixth place last month in Hinchingbrooke; we only just had a full team, but some great running with four of our men in the top 10! Well done to those that turned up. We are still in a very strong 5th place in the league, equal on points with NVH, 1 point ahead of Ramsey.

Next week is leg 4, at Whitemoor Prison in March. As always, it's a 5 mile run, starting at 11am and entry is free. All you need is some form of Pactrac kit and a valid membership. Let me know if you need either. Everyone is very welcome - you'll contribute to the team whatever your result, and it's a good social club occasion as well. The race HQ is March AC's Clubhouse on Longhill Road March PE15 OBL. Directions are on http://www.frostbiteleague.org.uk/MarchAC_Directions.pdf.

The website doesn't have course details yet, but I presume it's the same as last year: a mixture of grassy tracks (first 2 and last 2 miles) and tarmac (mile 3 and last 200m). This is normally not a very muddy course, but there could be slippery bits due to the rain, so offroad shoes are advisable. All flat as you would expect in March. This is one race where it pays off to start a bit more to the front than normal, as there is a tight, bendy and slippery bit after just 200m.

It would be great to see a large group of Pactrac'ers again. You can see it as a good last test run for Folksworth 15 in three weeks time. Or you can see it as a nice run in a friendly environment with a large group of runners of all abilities. Or as a chance to meet up and talk tri season planning with clubmates. Or even do it to help us get to 4th. Or all of the above.

Let me know if you intend to run, preferably here on the Forum, otherwise on jjf_99@hotmail.com!

Jaap

Next week, Sunday 7 February, is leg 5 of the Frostbite season, in Bourne Woods. We always seem to struggle with getting a full team for this race, so I thought I'd send an early heads-up - put it in your calendar! Full details in the regular email over the weekend.

Thanks
Jaap

Sun, 31st Jan 2016 - 3:02 p.m.

Hi all,

Next week is leg 5 of the Frostbite season, in Bourne Woods. As always, the race starts at 11am, is free to enter, and all you need is some form of Pactrac kit (and a valid membership). This is the woodiest, most off-road and muddiest of the Frostbites, so it should be fun! Definitely one for off-road shoes - or wellies.

Some good running again at last month's race in March. Somehow Paul didn't win this time, that must have been Mo Farah in disguise. Great result for Rob in 8th. Our 7 male scorers were all in the top 100, so that's not bad. We only just had enough ladies for a team, so well done for the three that turned up and really helped our result. We were 9th on the day, only 9 points ahead of 10th, so those final sprints have made a difference! We are now in 6th overall - Yaxley is breathing down our necks but there is a big gap behind them. But we should be looking up: NVH is still only 1 point ahead.

As far as I can tell the course, race HQ and parking arrangements are the same as last year. Race headquarters is at Westfield School (PE10 9QS) in Bourne; you can find directions on http://www.frostbiteleague.org.uk/BourneMap.pdf. Parking at the Woods itself is a lot closer by, but spaces are limited so you will have to be on time. Plan carefully: if it's full, it will take a long time to drive to the School, park there and walk to the start.

Let me know if you intend to run so that I have an idea of numbers. Also let us know if you need to buy Pactrac kit in order to take part.

As always, we are starting to think about the nominations for Pactrac Frostbite runner of the year. There is a trophy for the best male and female runner. At the moment Tom Briggs is the favourite for the men, with Rob Brownlee just behind him, both having run all four races. For the ladies Amy Young is in the lead, but Donna Starsmore, Andrea Robinett, Sue Burnett, Amy Hayes and even Abi Schofield are still in with a chance, depending on the last two races.

Thanks,
Jaap

Sun, 31st Jan 2016 - 9:36 p.m.

I'll be there.

Pactrac Frostbite runner of the year contention you say...would genuinely love Tom to scoop that (I'll be tripping him up at the next Frostbite) ;)

Mon, 1st Feb 2016 - 10:19 a.m.

I have not run for while due to injury, but I will give Bourne a go. Looking forward to the mud, see you all there.

Tue, 2nd Feb 2016 - 5:18 p.m.

I will try and make it, probably include it into my long run. I've not run Bourne before, is it a trail shoes or spikes course?

Tue, 2nd Feb 2016 - 8:12 p.m.

Anyone interested in riding with me? I've got several empty seats. Leaving early from Hampton, as I intend to support the juniors, and then staying for lunch after the run. Let me know, and I can pick you up.

Wed, 3rd Feb 2016 - 10:48 a.m.

I'm only a maybe this weekend. I'm trying to rearrange some plans that I've already got so will have to keep you posted.

Sat, 6th Feb 2016 - 9:38 a.m.

From the confirmations I've seen it doesn't look like we have a full team for tomorrow. Please let us know if you are planning to run.

Sat, 6th Feb 2016 - 12:45 p.m.

I'll be there.

Sat, 6th Feb 2016 - 11:15 p.m.

I'll be there. Lunny; definitely trail shoes, not a spikes course.

Sun, 7th Feb 2016 - 8:04 a.m.

I'll be coming too.

Sun, 7th Feb 2016 - 8:24 p.m.

Hi all,

We did have a full team after all, well done for those who raced this morning.

The organisers have sent out the preliminary results. The seniors were 6th overall and we remain in 6th overall. Today's results were incredibly tight around us: only 17 points from 4th to 7th:
4. Werrington 734
5. Yaxley 736
6. PACTRAC 741
7. Riverside 751

So again, those sprints to the line have made a difference, and I'm a bit annoyed with myself for not chasing that Yaxley guy ahead of me a bit harder...

Next month it's all about our tussle with Yaxley for 6th and 7th place; they are just 1 point behind. NVH in 5th are 6 points ahead; Eye in 8th is 12 points behind, so those gaps are unlikely to be bridged.

Our Juniors were 5th on the day and now joint 4th overall.

Sun, 7th Feb 2016 - 11:08 p.m.

The girl who pushed in front of me after I crossed the finish in front of her was from Yaxley! That should have been one more point for them and one less for us, assuming she was in their top 3. I know it's not that big of a deal, so I didn't want to say anything at the time...it just wasn't very sporting of her. The Marshall even tried to tell her and she just shook her head at him and insisted she was where she belonged. :( Next time I will have to beat her by at least a full second. ;)

Sat, 5th Mar 2016 - 7:38 p.m.

Hi all,

Next Sunday is the last Frostbite of the season. It's in Hinchingbrooke (Huntingdon) again, but with a different start and course than where we raced in December. It is probably similar to the usual final race though: about 1km of road, but the rest will be grass or track - some might be very muddy, depending on the weather. For illustration, last year's course is here:
http://www.frostbiteleague.org.uk/Default%20page/Race6%202015%20BRJ%20Senior%20Frostbite%20course.pdf.

The Race HQ is Hinchingbrooke Park School (Postcode PE29 3BN). Car parking will be even more of a challenge than normal with this race, because of building works. The organisers urgently encourage everyone to car share, but expect to end up in one or the Park & Rides in the area. Or you could cycle in, we are triathletes after all... For directions and parking information, see:
http://www.frostbiteleague.org.uk/Race6%20car%20parking_2016.pdf

Great racing last month in Bourne to get 6th overall, and we could even have been 4th with only a few points less. We had a really good turnout: great for team spirit. We are 6th in total (last year we were 11th going into the last race, so well done us). At Hinchingbrooke it's all about our tussle with Yaxley for 6th and 7th place; they are just 1 point behind. The gaps with 5th and 8th are so large that they are unlikely to be bridged. So watch out for those yellow-and-green tops and don't let them push in front of you after the finish (right Amy?!).

As always, everyone is welcome, you just need to be a member and have some form of club kit (let me know if you need any). There is no entry fee, the start is at 11am, let me know if you plan to be there.

Series trophies will be awarded after the race, including the PACTRAC Runner of the Series trophies. Unlike previous seasons, our winners have not been decided yet and will depend on the final race. For the women, no one has done more than 3 races and it's between Amy Hayes and Donna Starsmore; Donna is just 10 points ahead. For the men, Tom Briggs and Robert Brownlee have both done all 5 races and have been getting into or close to the top 10; initially Tom was quicker but Robert has been steadily improving. Tom is still leading by 25 points. So we have two exciting extra races on - that should spur us on to beat Yaxley!

We won't be able to attend the ceremony, so it would be good to know if anyone else is planning to.

Thanks,
Jaap

Sun, 6th Mar 2016 - 5:57 p.m.

Bringing my A game. I will be driving down from Peterborough/Hampton. If anyone wants a seat in my car. Let me know. :)

Thu, 10th Mar 2016 - 6:21 p.m.

Huntingdon Park Run is cancelled this weekend, due to flooding in the park. Is Frostbite still going ahead? If so, I will be there, but will be doing a longish run beforehand to make up my marathon miles.

Thu, 10th Mar 2016 - 8:35 p.m.

Hi all,
Thanks Kate, I just received a message from the organisers about exactly that. At present Sunday's race is going ahead, probably with different courses - these will be finalised on Saturday. We will be informed if the situation changes. No further rain forecast at the moment, so I would presume it's on. Will send clubwide email, also to rally the troops: at the moment it's just Amy, Kate and Mariska running: full ladies team, no men!

Sat, 12th Mar 2016 - 11:51 a.m.

Hi all,
BRJ have confirmed that tomorrow's Frostbite is definitely on. No further details on course changes, but expect the normal combination of road, track and grass, and a bit of mud. Would be good to get some further confirmations, I haven't heard from many men yet.
