World Championships - Who's where and when?

Sat, 31st Aug 2013 - 12:30 p.m.

I thought I'd start a thread for Pactrac'ers both competing and spectating at the World Championships to share their wave start times and general plans.

With 8000 plus folks competing in open and age group races over the weekend and 200,000 (predicted) to be watching. It won't be easy to spot each other and be ready to shout support.

To start ball rolling - I'll be there on Wednesday evening for the Opening Ceremony, and hopefully (work commitments pending) to watch some of the aquathon.

Travelling back to London on the Friday - staying in the Copthorne - til Monday. Planning to watch as much racing over the weekend as possible. Then I'm off at 10:30 on Sunday in the last age group wave before the elite men! Number 32478.

Then closing ceremony....

Sat, 31st Aug 2013 - 8:29 p.m.

Good idea Christina hope your training back on track.

Message from Kate Armstrong (Mike - Kate is having trouble registering for the site?)

Hi Christina. Have now got number and start time (which is now changed, so good job I checked!!). Details are: AG sprint F50-54, Friday 13th Sept at 10.50hrs. Number is 21541. Staying with a friend in Northwood, so will be travelling back and to by Tube, but driving in on Thursday 12th with the bike in the car, and parking in pre-booked parking in Park lane (lot of "park" words there!). Cheerleaders will be Mum, Angie (Mum's sister), Mark and David (big bruv and little bruv) and friend, Ray. Will probably be in London from Tuesday onwards, and will be there hopefully to cheer on everyone in their races too. Will also be going to Triathlon Square for the opening ceremony. Perhaps we need to do a bit of research to find somewhere to designate as PACTRAC Corner?

Wed, 4th Sep 2013 - 5:21 p.m.

Hiya, I am traveling down on thurs and staying at Imperial College. Working in transition for the para tri on the fri and the open race on the sat, then on the back of a motorbike for the WC race on the Sunday (may possibly be the only time I am quicker than Christina on a bike :-)). I will have plenty of free time on friday so look forward to cheering on those doing the sprint. Sam

Wed, 4th Sep 2013 - 7:09 p.m.

I'm racing in the very last Open Sprint wave on Saturday 14th September at 16:40.

Kate has a great car park, but I can only find car park's in the area for £24.

Is anybody "dumping" their cars further out and riding in?

Interestingly, PACTRAC also had 8 qualifiers the last time that the World Triathlon Championships were held on these shores, 20 years ago, in 1993.

Sadly Eric Hatliff and Margaret Stevens are no longer with us. Margaret was the best placed PACTRACer in 1993 coming home in 5th place in the World!

Margaret's husband Ralph also competed. Ralph from Helpston is looking to make a
comeback next year when he moves up into the 80-84 Age Group! (Their
son Peter also competed for, I think, Manchester Triathlon Club).

Georgina Jennings also competed in 1993 in Salford, Manchester, and
will be competing again on Friday.

Peter Mein is still a member of PACTRAC and usually does at least 1 triathlon a year.

Richard Wittering now lives in Milton Keynes, Heather Sanderson lives around
Cambridge and Debbie Jones in Lanzerote.

Wed, 11th Sep 2013 - 10:32 a.m.

Chris is off ...

Georgina saving herself for Friday.

Mon, 16th Sep 2013 - 2:50 p.m.

In Wednesday's Aquathlon, Chris Jordan came 24th in his Age
Group, whilst Georgina Jennings withdrew through illness, hoping to
save all of her energies for Friday's Sprint Triathlon.

Distances:

swim 1,000 meters in the Serpentine.

run 3 miles.

24. Chris Jordan 18:09...... 29.37 = 47.46

-----------------------

On Friday 2 of our girls competed in the World Age Group Sprint Championships:

distances were:

swim 750 metres in the Serpentine.

bike 14 miles - 3 laps. Flat.

run 3 miles - 2 laps. Flat.

45. Kate Armstrong 15:03.... 4:28.... 43:33.... 3:43.... 21:10 = 1:27:55 (50-54 Age Group = 45th).

Georgina was suffering from Bronchitis going into this race, and so
didn't start in the Aquathlon 2 days earlier. She was 3rd heading out
onto the run course and was caught just after the start of the 2nd of
the 2 run laps. 2nd place beat her by less than the difference in their
swim times.

Georgina was PACTRAC's best placed athlete coming home 4th in her Age Group.

1. Lynda Lubelczyk (USA) 16:24.... 4:08.... 40:42.... 4:08.... 26:28 = 1:31:50
2. Annemie Rath (GER)..... 14:31.... 4:43.... 44:17.... 4:33.... 27:34 = 1:35:36
3. Ann Blatchford(AUS)...... 15:35.... 4:02.... 47:21.... 4:14.... 25:43 = 1:36:53
4. Georgina Jennings......... 16:53.... 4:55.... 43:12.... 4:58.... 27:51 = 1:37:47

--------------------------

In the Open Sprint race on Saturday, Steve Hope and Pedro Polsen competed
(but not in the official World Championships) over the distances of:

swim 750 metres in the Serpentine.

bike 14 miles - 3 laps. Flat.

run 3 miles - 2 laps. Flat.

Results:

95. Steve Hope.... 13:13.... 3:42.... 38:36.... 3:50.... 20:52 = 1:20:10 AG 6th.
331. Pedro Polson 12:05.... 3:54.... 41:33.... 4:20.... 26:17 = 1:28:07 AG 16.

---------------------------

PACTRAC had 6 athletes in the World Age Group Standard Distance
Championships.

Distances were:

swim 750 metres - this was reduced
from the advertised 1500 metres on safety grounds, i.e., the water had
got colder, and the organisers were concerned, not so much with
athletes getting cold in the swim, but suffering from hypothermia on
the bike afterwards.

bike 25 miles - twice out, on the site's of
London, along the Mall, through to Buckingham Palace, right over to
Tower Hill and back, and a half-loop of Hyde Park.

run 6.25 miles around Hyde Park.

Kim led the swimmers out in her Age Group. Neil had
problems with his goggles and couldn't "sight" properly.

Results:

173. Neil Tandy... 10:15.... 2:47.... 59:54.... 2:50.... 39:53 = 1:55:38 AG (20-24) 31st.

263. Simon Hoppe 11:08.... 3:03.... 61:38.... 2:48.... 39:29 = 1:58:04 AG (40-44) 33.

545. Antony Brown 12:15.... 3:33.... 62:12.... 3:14.... 43:15 = 2:04:26 AG (50-54) 45.

341 Christina Cork 13:24.... 3:25.... 71:00.... 3:36.... 47:12 = 2:18:35 AG (35-39) 55.

370. Kimberley Bell 9:51.... 3:28.... 73:52.... 3:47.... 48:39 = 2:19:34 AG (20-24) 37th.

1264. Chris Jordan 14:40.... 4:28.... 80:41.... 4:28.... 61:15 = 2:45:30 AG (60-64) 77.
